Fresh Eyes on Winter - Nature Drawing for Everyone! (Whole Series: Jan 11, Jan 25, Feb 1, Feb 15)
Welcome to Perri Howard and Mary Kiesau's winter series of nature drawing classes! In January and February, we will focus on understanding and looking our winter world with fresh eyes. Your observations (and things we bring into the classroom including live branches and a variety of photographs) will guide our drawing lessons and your sketching practice. These themed classes will meet on two Fridays in January and two in Friday, each from 12:30pm-5:00pm. Each class will include a field experience, natural history lesson, and drawing skills instruction. This is where you register for the whole series. If you'd like to sign up for individual classes, find each of them listed separately in the Class link.
Jan 11: Light & shadows with branches and berries
Jan 25: Drawing shacks, sheds, and barns
Feb 1: Identifying and drawing winter birds
Feb 15: River landscapes in winter
The 4-class series is $240 (save $20 over registering for each of the four classes separately). Space is limited to 12 people per class, and registration is required. Register here or by contacting Mary Kiesau at 509-551-6714, kiesau@gmail.com or Perri Howard, 509-557-2299
We keep the classes small so that we can work with each of you individually throughout the class time, and tailor teaching to your specific needs. Because of that, people who consider themselves true beginners (“I’ve never drawn before!”) as well as people who have been drawing or painting for years - and everyone in between - all have a fun and worthwhile experience in these classes. Our students tell us these classes work for everyone! The classes are designed for ages 16 and up. If you would like to bring a youngster under the age of 16, please call/email Perri to explore the possibilities.
Weather depending, each class will start with a short session outdoors in the field, observing, walking, and getting to know our surroundings with an inspiring naturalist lesson by Mary. We’ll make sure you are all comfortable in the cold, but we believe spending some time outside and learning and doing something new is very beneficial to the creative process! We'll then transition to Perri’s warm studio at TwispWorks for three or so hours of drawing lessons and practice.
We’ll pick field locations that are easy to access for all levels of mobility - and if you don’t want to join us for the short outdoor session you can skip that and still attend the indoor drawing lessons. The indoor session will include fundamental drawing tips and lessons like creating depth and perspective, giving your shapes form, texture and expression drawing "landscapitos," and working with color.
All materials, including pens, pencils, paper, and teaching tools, will be included, but feel free to bring your own materials if you’d like. More details will be sent before each class. Grab a friend, join us, and learn how to draw and keep a field journal, with fresh eyes on winter!
